Oh, I agree the characterization - particularly of Sherlock - is tricky. Even on his official blog, he comes off sometimes as a petulant but genius child. He's a hard nut to crack! But I've read some really lovely stuff, wading through the riffraff, and I'd be happy to give you a handful of fluff recs that also, imo, have great characterizations. Then you can decide for yourself if you think the writers are on the track or not. :D I haven't written anything serious yet, but I have been chatting nonstop about possible characterizations for the last few days, and I've come to some pleasant conclusions, at least for the moment. :)
