Also, I was looking for a female version of Hallelujah. I was quite pleased by the Alexandra Burke version. The arrangement of the second part was different, but interesting. (Kind of Cher vs Nancy Sinatra on Bang, Bang...)

Random Chinese Story

There was a certain General Li, whose 3rd son Nezha had a peculiar birth and was hard to rein in.

When he was a boy, Nezha slew the third son of the corrupt Dragon King. The Dragon King came to the general's door demanding revenge. The general, fearful of the dragon's wrath, ordered his son to commit suicide.

Not only did Nezha indeed obey, but he also sliced off his flesh to return to his mother, and disassembled his bones to return to his father. By doing so, he severed the link between the parents and the child.

Nezha's soul sought out Gautama Buddha to petition this injustice. The Buddha wished to make him return to life, but General Li was still afraid and refused to part with Nezha's mortal remains. The Buddha made a new body for Nezha out from a lotus.

The newly reborn and immortal Nezha desired to kill the general for revenge, but Buddha intervened and soothed the boy by telling him that from now on, the Buddha shall be his father instead.

I've always been fascinated by this story—and particularly, with the imagery of Nezha returning his flesh and bones to his birth parents. As the Chinese tend to emphasize filial piety, this is the one of the very few stories of rebellion that I recall.

The idea was that the child owes the parents a debt for bringing him to this world and endowing him with an earthly body. Nezha repaid this debt in full.
