I don't even want to think about how long Transfiguration is going to have to be.
Because. The outline itself? Three pages, SINGLE SPACED.
The writing is currently at 5k words, and it's just the beginning. We have two chapters more or less done, though, and if we finish the third chapter over the weekend we would be able to post the first chapter. (No, I don't understand this arrangement either. Miss Ligeia came up with it.) Would be subject to retcon.
In any case, Ligeia and I soldier on, more smoothly at times than others. I am definitely not the easiest person to collaborate with (again, there are many people who can attest to that), but I haven't been this much in love with a story (of my own) for a long time now. And while I usually do not write love stories in the true sense, when I do write something like this, it usually comes out well (I am discounting Pictures of You, for those of you who read it...). Thus against all improbability, I am sincerely hoping it would be completed in reasonable time.
What else...hmm oh yeah. The other canon characters making appearance in Transfiguration so far: Pike (pretty significant role, much like in XI, and I like the guy a lot anyway), Gaila (fun cameo), Bones (cameo for now, maybe more later?). George and Winona are there in the flashbacks. I kind of wrote Sarek and Amanda out because I didn't want that to distract from the story. Would actually like to include the rest of the Enterprise crewUhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty; but I'm just not sure where we can fit them.
Also went to New York Public Library (the huge one near Grand Central) today and did some research for the fic. I took some notes on Chosen: Gay Catholic Priests Tell Their Stories by Elizabeth Stuart and Wonderfully, Fearfully Made: Letters on Living With Hope, Teaching Understanding, ... from a Gay Catholic Priest With AIDS by Robert Arpin. Both book made me crying nonstop in the huge reading room. I first became enamored with the idea of a Church!AU because I thought of Catholicism (the cross, the robe, the sacrament) as a motif (and okay, all that is still hot), but as I delve more into background research, I have also come to see the parallel between XI!Spock's love for Vulcan and AU!Spock's love for the Church.
Early on, when I only watched the XI movie once or twice, I said to somebody that Spock's relationship with the planet Vulcan makes me sad, because he loves Vulcan, but it doesn't love him back. Upon reflection, however, now I believe that despite the rejection and dislocation, Spock still loves with sincerity, dignity, and above all an undying hope. It's very much a part of the reason why I love him, and in Transfiguration, I seek to capture that same heartbreaking yet beautiful dissonance between him and his Church.
(I can hear Ligeia saying in the background: "WTH? Didn't we just want church porn!!!!???")
